Chuzzle’s Incredible Journey
Chuzzle woke up one bright sunny morning and decided this was the day he was going to go visit his dear friend Whuzzle. Whuzzle, who had recently moved deep into the woods with her family, was his very best friend and he missed her very much.
Chuzzle jumped out of bed, had a big breakfast of nuts and fruit.
He prepared a snack to take along with him since the walk to Whuzzle’s home would be a long one.
Whuzzle’s house was past the Little Stream, through the Deep Forest, beyond the Blue Green Pond, and up the Giant Big Hill.
Now Chuzzle was ready to go.
He said goodbye to his mother and father an started on his way.
“Don’t forget all the things we have taught you,” his mother called after him.
“No mother, I won’t,” Chuzzle said as he waved goodbye one more time.
Eventually Chuzzle came to the Little Stream. He stopped and looked about, checking to make sure there were no enemies lurking around, ready to pounce on him when he was not prepared.
He was about to cross the Little Stream when he spotted the Red Fox! Chuzzle knew that foxes like to eat porcupines, so he quickly curled up in a little ball and waited.

At just the right moment, Chuzzle smacked the Red Fox’s nose with his very prickly tail loaded with sharp quills.
The Red Fox jumped, howled frightfully and ran away into the forest. As soon as Chuzzle knew the Red Fox was gone, he got up and dusted himself off.
“That wasn’t so bad!” he thought to himself. He really felt very proud of himself for chasing the hungry fox away so quickly.
He moved towards the Little Stream and soon found a long that had fallen across the stream. Carefully he hopped onto the log.
Chuzzle stopped. He looked at the Deep Forest before him and took a deep breath. The Deep Forest looked very dark and deep and endless. But his love for his friend was greater than his fear of the Deep Forest and so he very carefully continued on his journey.
Chuzzle had been warned about the Big Bad Bear that lived in the Deep Forest. He hoped he wouldn’t be seen by such a terrible enemy, and so he crept quietly along, not making a sound.
Chuzzle was certain Big Beasty Bear would eat him if he discovered him wandering through the bear’s territory.
In the middle of the Deep Forest, Chuzzle started to get hungry.
He was getting very tired as well and so instead of waiting till he was out of the forest, he stopped beside a bush and laid out his lunch on a picnic blanket.
Chuzzle ate his peanut butter sandwich and drank his juice and thought to himself. “I bet there really isn’t a Big Bad Beasty Bear at all. And if there is, he is probably sleeping.”
Just as Chuzzle finished clearing up, he heard a scary sound. Something very big and very noisy was making its way towards him!
The bushes rustled and cracked with the weight of something enormous and then a great big shadow fell over Chuzzle.
Chuzzle froze…
Slowly he looked up and there beside him was the Big Bad Beast Bear. Now what was he to do?
Chuzzle had never faced such and enormous foe before. Would his tiny sharp quills be enough to help him out this time? Then the bear roared fiercely and stood very tall on his hind legs. His great big paws clawed at the air.
Chuzzle curled into a very tight little ball and waited.

His parents had told him what to do if he ever ran into a big bad bear. He hoped his mother was right and that his quills would save him.
The bear came closer and put a gigantic paw right down on Chuzzle’s tail. He let out a terrible roar and Chuzzle gritted his teeth. He held his eyes tightly closed. What would the bear do now? Chuzzle peeked. What he saw made him very thankful.
He was thankful that God had given him quills and a tail. Chuzzle was relieved to see the bear limping away in the other direction.
“Boy am I glad I listened when my mother and father told me about bears!” he exclaimed out loud.
Chuzzle got up and started walking again. Not long after he came to the end of the Deep Forest and he knew he now was safe. From now on the journey would be easier.
Some time later Chuzzle came upon the Blue Green Pond. There he met the Busy Beavers.
The Busy Beavers were very busy indeed, working on their house. Chuzzle got a cool drink from the Blue Green Pond, and called a cheery greeting to the beavers.
“Hello, friend,” answered the beavers. “We are having a very busy day as you can see so we can not invite you in for tea. Perhaps another time we will not be so busy and we can visit.
Chuzzle chuckled. A beaver was always too busy for tea and it would be a very surprising day should they ever have the time.
“It’s no matter,” Chuzzle replied. “I know you are my friends and I know how much work you have to do to keep your house in shape. Yes, we will have tea some other time.”
Chuzzle waved goodbye and went happily on his way.
There in front of him was the Big Hill. He had come to the last stage of his journey and soon he would be at Whuzzle’s house.
Chuzzle was getting quite tired by now and the sun was beginning to go down, but the excitement of seeing his friend gave him new energy. The hill was very big and very steep and it seemed a very long time before he came to the top.
The darkness had settled in now.
Chuzzle stood at the top of the Big Hill and took a deep breath of fresh air. Ahead in the clearing he could see the lights from the little log house he was sure belonged to Whuzzle’s family.
“What a beautiful place Whuzzle’s family have picked for a home,” Chuzzle thought to himself.
A few moments later Whuzzle opened the door and let out a cry of delight. She jumped into Chuzzle’s arms and they hugged and kissed each other.
“What a surprise!” declared Whuzzle. “I was just thinking how much I missed you and now you are here.”
That night Chuzzle and Whuzzle had a hearty supper together and talked about all kinds of things.
Then Chuzzle asked Whuzzle to marry him and she was so excited and so happy that she spilled tea all over herself and the table cloth.
Chuzzle’s and Whuzzle’s parents alike were excited for the couple because they knew Chuzzle and Whuzzle would be very happy together.
They invited many of the friends of the forest and put on a fabulous feast for everyone. Even the Busy Beavers joined in the wedding feast.
Since they were very skilled at building houses, as a wedding present, they offered to help build Chuzzle and Whuzzle their new home.
“What a special surprise,” Chuzzle and Whuzzle both exclaimed. “Soon we will be able to start a family of our own.”
And that is just what they did.
